Kitaba’s plans moving forward with help of volunteers
The Islamic Texts for the Blind has always relied on a small group of core volunteers. Recently, the number of volunteers has increased and this has led to exciting new prospects.
We have two major trips planned this year. The first one to Spain in April will provide opportunities for Blind and Visually Impaired People to study the culture of Andalucia with classroom activities and excursions including a visit to al-Hambra and the new Granada Mosque. All participants will have lessons on inclusion and supporting people with disabilities and there will be sports activities including obstacle races, goal ball and hiking. There will be study circles and optional sessions on Quran reading. So far, just under half the group are visually impaired and the others are all involved in working with people with disabilities.
Later this month, Abdul Aziz Ahmed, Chair of Kitaba is delivering two sets of training at Rigshospitalets Hospital, Copenhagen. One will be to medical staff on working with patients from the ethnic minorities and the other to the Ethnic Resource Team and volunteers from the community.
In February, we have a very important event which provides teaching to Muslims with sensory impairments. At the moment, there are more than 60 Deaf students registered for the trip and fundraising by Uttrujj and other partners has raised more than £5000 towards the cost of BSL interpreters and food and accommodation for the students with sensory impairments. The course is open to all, but places are limited and priority will be given to those with disabilities.
Kitaba plans to publish two books this year, A Guide to Makkah and Madinah and the Book of Worship. We are also preparing a pre-Braille text, an audio and large print book of Prophetic Supplications for the Bind Muslim Group. Volunteers have been vital in making this work happen. There should be a series of book launches, lectures and workshops in May and June raising awareness of the needs of Blind and Disabled Muslims.
We would like to thank everyone that has helped us and hope they will continue to support us in the future. If anyone would like to volunteer their services, please contact email@example.com.
